Ghost Action 1.0b11

December 17th, 2006

I have released a new beta with the expiry date moved to 10th of January. Also the application size has been reduced from 9.2 Mb to 3.9 Mb.

I’m near a 1.0 release, but I don’t want to make a 1.0 release just before Christmas, since I will be away and might not be able to give immediate support in case something goes wrong. I think all major bugs have been resolved now, but there are some minor issues left, and I few improvements I would like to make.

I have actually been experimenting with a redesign of parts of the user interface which I hope will be a big improvement. So stay tuned for the next few updates.

Version 1.0b10 released

December 14th, 2006

Version 1.0b10 of Ghost Action has been released. It contains an important bugfix:

  • Creating a new action in the context view would cause an extra action row appear in the action list. (This bug was introduced in 1.0b8).

Ghost Action is a new to do list manager for Mac that helps you keep track of what you need to do using the Getting Things Done (GTD) method.

Ghost Action 1.0b9 released

December 14th, 2006

Yet another version of Ghost Action has been released with a number of bug fixes:

  • The columns can no longer be selected.
  • Resizing the window wouldn’t correctly resize the width of the project column in the project window.
  • A crash could occur during synchronization if a to do in iCal was moved between calendars AND changes were made in the name of the to do AND the calendar originally containing the to do were deleted.

Ghost Action version 1.0b8 released

December 11th, 2006

Improvements:

  • A notification is shown if new versions are available for download.
  • The description field in the action window now wraps the text, allows spell checking and adds a scroll bar when needed.

Bug fixes:

  • The warning shown when deleting contexts was missing the @-sign from the iCal calendar name.
  • Pressing the add button while editing a project, context or action name no longer looses the edit.
  • Strange context names such as <Context: 0×4c55c0>… could sometimes be set as the default for new actions.
  • To dos were imported even if they didn’t belong to a calendar starting with the @-sign if the action name contained a project name.

Ghost Action 1.0b6 released

December 5th, 2006

The biggest improvement in 1.0b6 is the new function auto-sync. Whenever you start, stop or put Ghost Action in the background, it will sync to iCal. You can turn on auto-sync in the preferences dialog. For the full list of changes see below:

Changes:

  • The expiration date has been moved forward to Dec 20.
  • A new preference option: automatically sync to iCal when starting, stopping and when in background
  • A new license menu item has been added
  • The column widths are retained between launches
  • The window size and position are retained between launches

Version 1.0b5 released

November 22nd, 2006

The only change compared to 1.0b4 is that the expiration date has been moved to Dec 6. I’m working on 1.0, but I don’t feel it’s good enough for release yet. Be patient, and keep sending me your suggestions!

Some of you have been asking about the price, it will be $19.95.

Version 1.0b4 of Ghost Action has been released

November 7th, 2006

The major improvement compared to 1.0b3 is that it will expire on the 22th instead of the 8th November :-) I will spend some extra time on 1.0 compared to my original plan, in the mean-time you can continue to use Ghost Action for free for two more weeks.

Bug fixes:

  • Deleting a calendar in iCal with a to do would cause Ghost Action to crash when synchronizing.
  • The “Actions” menu item in the “Window” was disabled and didn’t work.

Other changes:

  • The “Save” menu item has been removed since saving is done automatically when needed.

This beta (preliminary) version can be used for free until Nov 22. As with all beta versions, there might be some rough edges, so don’t use it with data you can’t afford to lose.

Brushed metal?

November 4th, 2006

Two users of Ghost Action have emailed me expressing their strong dislike of the brushed metal theme used in Ghost Action. I’m a little surprised that the mere look of an application evokes so strong emotions. After all, the brushed metal theme is used extensively in OS X 10.4.

It appears that Apple will abandon the brushed metal look for most or all applications in OS X 10.5 Leopard, in favor of a new look similar to iTunes 7. However, the new look is not available for non-Apple applications in 10.4, so the alternative to the brushed metal look would be the normal aqua look, as used in for example System Preferences and Dictionary. The brushed metal look is what Ghost Action currently uses and is also the look of iCal and the Finder, for example.

Which style do you prefer? Please give your vote and comments here, and you will help me decide which look I should use for Ghost Action. (Please only vote if you are actually considering using Ghost Action).

Update: The poll I decided to use from Question Pro just disappeared all of a sudden. To bad, but I had time to peek at the results before they were gone, and they were clear: 8 wanted the normal look, 1 didn’t care and nobody wanted brushed metal. So brushed metal “will have to go,” as one user said.
